Motorola Two-Way Radios FAQs

What is the difference between UHF and VHF radios, and which one do I need?

UHF (Ultra High Frequency) is ideal for indoor use or urban environments because the shorter waves can penetrate obstacles like concrete, wood, and steel. Most LRS customers choose UHF for restaurants, retail, and warehouses. VHF (Very High Frequency) is better for wide-open outdoor spaces with few obstructions, such as golf courses or construction sites.

Most high-power business-class radios require an FCC license to operate on dedicated frequencies. This prevents interference from other nearby businesses. LRS can help guide you through the licensing requirements for your specific purchase to ensure your business remains compliant.

Depending on the model, most LRS radios feature lithium-ion batteries that last between 12 to 18 hours on a single charge. For heavy-duty use, we offer models with extended battery lives and rapid-charge cradles that can fully recharge a unit in under 2 hours.

Yes. LRS offers a variety of compatible accessories, including C-shape earpieces, D-shell headsets, and surveillance-style acoustic tubes. These allow staff to communicate privately without disturbing guests in hospitality or retail settings.

Our business-class radios (like the Motorola RM and XT series) are built to military specifications (MIL-STD 810) for shock, vibration, and moisture. Many models feature an IP54 or IP55 rating, meaning they are protected against dust and water splashes, making them ideal for tough environments like kitchens or loading docks.

If you want your entire staff on one “party line,” a 1-channel radio is sufficient. However, if you need separate groups (e.g., Security, Front Desk, and Maintenance) to talk without interrupting each other, you should opt for a multi-channel radio (4, 8, or 16 channels).

Radios provide “Push-to-Talk” immediacy, which is faster than unlocking a phone and dialing. They are also more durable, have no monthly service fees, and eliminate the workplace distractions (social media, personal texts) associated with smartphones.

While pagers and radios serve different functions—pagers for one-way alerts and radios for two-way coordination—they are highly complementary. Some LRS systems can be configured so that a button press on a transmitter sends a recorded voice alert directly to your staff’s radios.

Range depends on the wattage and environment. A standard 1-watt radio typically covers up to 15 floors or 200,000 square feet. A 2-watt or 4-watt radio can extend much further. If you have a massive campus or multi-site operation, we offer digital/LTE radios that provide nationwide coverage.

Yes, LRS provides customized quotes for large-scale deployments and offers various financing or leasing programs for qualified business accounts.

Most of our business-class radios come with a 1-year or 2-year limited manufacturer’s warranty. LRS also provides expert technical support to help with frequency programming and troubleshooting.
